This is the RPG game I’ve always wanted. Hogwarts Legacy ties together the best bits from our favourites, Skyrim, Elden Ring, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla alongside various mechanics from others. Whilst we don’t get to choose a starting ‘race’ we do get the plenty of choices for character progression as we level up. Spells to learn. Upgrades & Gear. Potions. Shops. Beasts to rescue. Flying broomsticks. And plenty of side quests & hidden secrets to explore. You can easily loose an hour or two just ‘exploring’.

The game is utterly enchanting. Full of intricate details from talking paintings to duelling ghosts & intricate tapestries in the corridors. A big thank you to the art direction team as-well as everyone else involved. It’s not surprising to hear the game has been in development for over 5 years with a budget of $150million!

The story is brand new yet the scene we know. With raving fan reviews. It sold over a million pre-orders. 10th February 2023 aka release day saw Steam record over 800,000 active players.

As usual we find the ‘default recommended settings’ look flat & ugly. But with some simple settings tweaks we can achieve 40fps with low settings on the Steamdeck BUT it does fluctuate so I have chosen to limit to 30fps which is largely maintained whilst bumping the visual & lighting effects to high. This gives the best visual appearance whilst maintaining a stable FPS.

Settings

I’ve found the bellow settings seem to give the most stable FPS while also adding the high end visual effects like ambient occlusion. Sometimes in certain hallways the fps can dip but I think this will get patched soon. Also there can be annoying pauses at doors to outside Hogwarts but this is a game issue and hopefully will get patched.

Caution – Hogwarts Legacy uses Denuvo DRM which can cause some issues. Every update of proton will count as an activation. You can avoid the issues by not changing your proton versions. I use Proton Experimental but I recommend Proton 7.0-6 or ProtonGE. Pick one and stick with it.
